How Medicare works in Mississippi

The four parts are federal — identical in Mississippi and every other state. What changes here is which plans your county sells, the Medicaid limits that lower your costs, and how the free counseling program runs.

Part A
Inpatient hospital, skilled nursing, hospice, some home health. Most people pay no premium.
Part B
Doctor visits, outpatient care, prevention. The standard 2026 premium is $202.90/mo; higher incomes pay an IRMAA surcharge. IRMAA calculator →
Part C
Medicare Advantage — a private bundle of A + B, usually with drug coverage, through a network. We never name or rank specific plans.
Part D
Prescription drugs — as a stand-alone plan or built into an Advantage plan.

How Mississippi compares

Fewer of your neighbors choose Advantage than the national norm — Original Medicare + Medigap is a well-worn path here. Neither is "better"; it's a fit-to-your-situation choice. CMS Monthly Enrollment · 2026 (source, opens in new tab)

Medigap in Mississippi — the six-month window that matters

Mississippi uses the federal standardized system: Plan G is Plan G, insurer to insurer — only price and service differ. Your protection is timing: for six months after you are both 65 and on Part B, no insurer can turn you down or charge more for your health history. We never name or price policies; MICAP can show you current Mississippi rates for free.

How Medicare's four parts fit together

Federal and identical everywhere — so it lives once, on the hub: Medicare in plain language. Five minutes, no state-by-state copy-paste.

Mississippi Medicare: common questions

When can I enroll in Medicare in Mississippi?

Timing is federal, so it is the same as everywhere: a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday, then the Annual Enrollment Period each October 15 – December 7. Missing Part B without qualifying coverage creates a permanent penalty.

Does Mississippi have its own Medicare rules?

No. Eligibility, enrollment windows, and penalties are identical nationwide. What varies is which plans your county sells, the Medicaid income limits for Medicare Savings Programs, Medigap consumer protections, and how MICAP operates.

Can Mississippi help me pay my Medicare premiums?

Yes, if your income is limited. Medicare Savings Programs — QMB, SLMB, QI — can pay your Part B premium and, with QMB, your deductibles and cost-sharing. Qualifying also gives you Extra Help with drug costs automatically. Apply through Mississippi Medicaid or ask a MICAP counselor.

How many Medicare plans are available in Mississippi?

Mississippi has roughly 86 Medicare Advantage plans statewide, though the number in your specific county may be higher or lower. We do not name, compare, or recommend specific plans — see every plan in your ZIP on the official Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov.
